I have never felt that way. I’m free to paint it, add on, update it, and I have never had a banker tell me I couldn’t. When you try that with a landlord, you will get resistance.
There are also Home Owners Associations that make a fuss whenever you wanna do something for your house such a build a swimming pool in your backyard or even start a garden, try to tell you what you can and can't do.
