"Monado" is the name of the sword. The buffs he can give himself are called "arts". Also shield isn't even that bad, Shulk can just say no to losing a stock.

These are all good in their own way, however, while in shield 'art,' he pretty much can't move or take stocks, not to mention he can get ewgf'ed by Kazuya until it wears off, and when it does, he can do Kazuya stuff. All of the arts have they're disadvantages, but I found shield to have the worst drawback.

Shield art is the least useful for sure, but that's not saying much when it's the smallest slice of cake.
