There's even a post-apocalyptic science-fiction novel called "A Canticle For Leibowitz" that's about Catholic monks protecting and preserving humanity's scientific and technological knowledge in the aftermath of a nuclear war, just like how 5th-century Irish monks did when the Roman Empire fell, BTW :>

Why did you end with the most controversial one lol

Instead of Galileo, you should have said "Copernicus".

Didn't the church persecute Galileo?

I would've said something like, "Aye, the Church almost excommunicated him, but placed him on house arrest for the rest of his life," but such is not the case. I'm currently taking astronomy, and my teacher recently spoke of the manner. In my own curiosity, as well as wanting to ensure that my information was correct, found this fascinating article about the history of the centuries-long debate:

Galileo was celebrated for his discoveries. But he became arrogant, demanding the Church declare heliocentrism right despite not being proven by Jupiter having rings. (Generally accepted "proof" not coming until the 18th and 19th centuries with demonstrable observation of the Parallax View.)

What got Galileo in trouble was his obnoxiousness. Since Copernicus proposed heliocentrism a generation before, it was a raging debate among astronomers, none "persecuted" for holding those views by the Church.
