The wealthy are the subject of the song! "These rich men north of Richmond, Lord knows they all just wanna have total control, wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do, and they don't think you know, but I know that you do, 'cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end 'cause of rich men north of Richmond,

“I’ve been sellin’ my soul, workin’ all day / Overtime hours for bullshit pay.” Anthony’s plaint rings down the decades. But as long as disaffection is shaped by a politics that abases working-class hopes, and is directed as much against the undeserving poor or the culturally different as against employers and politicians who seek to crush unions and impose austerity, rich men, whether north and south of Richmond, will remain in power.

Do you really think people like Oliver Anthony really understand or think about all the scholarly socialist BS? Class struggle? Workers unite? No. They understand they are oppressed politically, socially and economically. Government, unions, media, and business are all exploiting them. Neither Party listens to them. They don't see any way out. This is what the song is about, and why so many people want to hear it.

If you don't like the music of Oliver Anthony, you don't have to listen to it. if you don't like other people listening to his music, you should ask yourself why you feel threatened by it.

I just think he's a trifle overrated.

Most of the article compares some unknown singers from 1930s who supported Unions. No one knows who Handcox was. Why didn't he choose Woody Guthrie or Pete Seeger? The purpose of this article is to discredit Oliver Anthony and his song. It fails miserably.
