She got abandoned there aged about 8-9 and she was about 19-20 in TFA so she spent under half of her life as a scavenger, and during that time she was given food and supplies from that alien guy played by Simon Pegg.

Strictly speaking, Luke did not grow up with parental love. His mother was dead and he didn't know his father. Luke grew up with familial love.

As much as I hate to admit it, I did watch Rise Of Skywalker (I feel like throwing up just thinking about it) and yes, Rey's parents left her with a slaver and doomed her to be a scavenger rather than simply run away with her.

If you haven't seen ROS I'd advise that you don't. You're not missing anything and I don't want your sanity to be hurt by the sheer stupidity of that film.

That would have required her to struggle, lose, be humbled and to change and learn from her experiences.

Her whole girlboss ultra-plot-armour schtick just wouldn't allow for that.
