While Australians definitely get my sympathy, the first mistake that citizens collectively made was to allow their government to disarm them. All else followed from that.
It might as well have been since Democrats didn't learn a damn thing from it . . . aside from treating it like a 'How To' manual.

That would be a strange thing for them to do since they could just have asked the Soviet Union directly as they were very much answering questions like that at the time.
Seeing as, you know... they were what the book was about.
I haven't figured out if the vast bulk of them are the classic useful idiot types being manipulated by their leadership class or if they actually want to destroy our nation. Of course the end results will be the same.

Suggestion? Maybe the reason you're struggling to hard to figure it out is because the premise of the question itself is incorrect.
Funny how some movies reflect life, 50 years ago there was a kids Movie called Animal Farm. It starts out that everyone was equal. Later, the bosses decided that whilst everyone was equal, some were in fact, more equal than others! And now in Oz we are being asked if we actually WANT to agree with the same thing. Yarra Man
