If I'm correct Saul kept overreaching his authority between the Priesthood and Government. He did a couple of things that were solely reserved for God's Priests. Today and because of Jesus those things may not look like a big deal but back then overreaching like that may have gotten a person stoned to death if God didn't personally deal with the person.
