I like this one.

Funny when the Righties try to claim this is about Lefties, of all things (and they used to on this site a lot), when Carpenter himself said it was indeed a critique of the Reagan Era, in case those not around at the time didn't know what a Yuppie was nor how overt the representation,,,

John carpenter is one of my favorite directors. The only thing more bad ass than this was escape from New York. And the thing.

I dunno, I felt it was a little off the mark. That fight scene was 18 mins too long, the aliens could have used some fixing up by someone wanting something more than nifty Halloween masks...
I can see what he was trying to do, but it just seemed almost there but not quite...

I'll still watch it whenever I see it, but as far as I go, Carpenter lost his edge since after Big Trouble in Little China. It's like he made that parody of his own movies and forgot how to do it right after.

Back then critics trashed The Thing, now they realize it was great. Sheesh, the dunderheads acted that corny first one with James Arness as a giant spiny walking green carrot in B&W that looked like Frankenstein (!?!) was a classic, while Carpenter's was actually total aces but they shat on it. Stupid fhuckheads.

I saw Escape from New York EIGHT times in the theater! Sat through it twice at the Leows Paradise on the Grand Concourse in the Bx, then another time three times in a row, then twice with my little cousin (he would had sat through it 3 times if I asked him, but I thought that'd be a bit too much for a little kid. We played Ms Packman in the lobby between showings), then in a double bill with Cat People sometime later Downtown.
Ahh, good times, when going to the movies meant something. *wipes tear*

I loved Christine too. a lot.

I'm rambling...

Remember hell comes to frog town? Rowdy roddy was Kurt Russels stand in whenever carpenter couldn’t get him to do a movie. Big trouble in little china was the most excellent movie when I was growing up! It was a masterpiece and Kurt Russell is my favorite actor. After Kurt it’s probably Gerard Butler. I’m a sucker for the old school action guys too, chuck, Bruce Willis, Arnold. Maybe it’s nostalgia more than anything, can’t help it.

Hell Comes to Frogtown? Rang a bell but I had to look it up. Naah, never even saw a minute of it. And I'll watch anything post-Apocalyptic at least once, even Cyborg with Jean Claude van Dumbe! Actually I'll watch that sucker any chance I can get, the only movie of his I can sit through! The head baddie was the shitz, he had the greatest lines ever:

🟡 "It'll stop the pain"

⚫ [Him] "I like the pain"

🟡 "Go to Hell!"

⚫ "Been there"

I even watched After the Fall of New York (on VCR), which got me all peppy when I first saw the poster, thinking it was the sequel to Escape... only to realize it was a chintzy Italian exploitation ripoff of it. What a cruddy movie, haha

Frogtown was actually co-directed by Donald G. Jackson and R. J. Kizer, not Carpenter tho, I saw now.

Kurt is beautiful, totally underrated. He BECAME Elvis in Carpenter's movie. Aces.

Halloween was real good too.

Carpenter used to know how to pace his movies well, let them breath, take their time if need be without getting boring.

Cyborg was my favorite growing up too. I think the bad guys name was fender. Vague recollections are coming back. They crucified him to a ship mast and he kicked it until it broke.
1 up, 1y
Kurt is a beaut in terms of concept, everything. Absolute legend.
Goldie is cool too. Glad they've lasted this long.
I heard he was crushed by his first wife divorcing him, as he was a forever sort of person, not the usual Hollywood turnstyle marriage-o-rama type.
1 up, 1y
Yeah, it took some doing, but Jean Clod's heel is tougher than wood, so,,,

HEREs what JACK is.. RULE 8: “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.”

Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. (Attack, attack, attack from all sides, never giving the reeling organization a chance to rest, regroup, recover and re-strategize.)

RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”

There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions. (Pretty crude, rude and mean, huh? They want to create anger and fear.)

Well, a lot of damage can be done in 4 yrs, look what he did already.
America's decline in the world is now official. The hate against us used to be out of plain jealousy, now it's because we've become a joke.

Meanwhile we have a certain demographic disrupting everything with their fermented flatulance, bringing everything down to their level. That ain't an easy septic tank to crawl out of.

First cpl yrs he had no idea what he was doing, then he started to learn how to work the system. Imagine what he can do out fresh out the gate with all the connections he now has should he get elected again. The USA will be over. The camps will be open.

You 2 aren't hard to figure out.. RULE 7: “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.”

Don’t become old news. (Even radical activists get bored. So to keep them excited and involved, organizers are constantly coming up with new tactics.)
[deleted]
0 ups, 1y
RULE 6: “A good tactic is one your people enjoy.”

They’ll keep doing it without urging and come back to do more. They’re doing their thing, and will even suggest better ones. (Radical activists, in this sense, are no different that any other human being. We all avoid “un-fun” activities, and but we revel at and enjoy the ones that work and bring results.)

RULE 10: “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.”

Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog. (Unions used this tactic. Peaceful [albeit loud] demonstrations during the heyday of unions in the early to mid-20th Century incurred management’s wrath, often in the form of violence that eventually brought public sympathy to their side.)
