The one i have now i’ve had for about 4 years WITHOUT THE CAP and it works perfectly fine :o
I might have to replace it sooner or later because the charge port on my ipad is loose and the only reasonable cause i can think of is lint from my apple pencil charger getting into my ipad port when I plug it in to charge it up
