The best solution to everything is individual liberty and morality. Without it there is little to no prosperity. And by prosperity I don't just mean people getting rich, I mean technology that will save lives.
What people buy or don't buy is their decision. Neither you or anyone else has the right or the authority to limit what a person deems as valuable to them. You may think someone is buying something useless, and sometimes it is useless but other times you have no idea what their intended use is. It could have great utilitarian value but all you see is something "useless".
That is why socialism, communism, fascism and Nazism are all failures. They take away the rights of the individual to decide what is in their best interest and give that right to a small handful of "experts" who make decisions for people they've never met who live hundreds or thousands of miles away.
Materialism has it's negative aspects in the hearts and minds of those who continuously seek the latest and greatest of everything but their actions have positive effects on the lives of those who make those products. Those people get to buy groceries, pay rent or a mortgage, clothe, feed and educate their children, contribute to charitable causes and a gazillion other things. Without that materialistic greed those products don't get made and people lose jobs.
I used to think like you when I was young. I thought society was too commercial. People were caught up in buying things instead of connecting with other people. But then I came to the realization that freedom is the greatest gift from God that man has. With that freedom they structure their lives the way they best see fit. Even if it doesn't seem right to someone else. In other words, if you don't like materialism the stop being materialistic and let everyone else be everyone else. And if you still cannot let go of wanting to control other people then you need psychiatric help because you are a narcissist and we have far too many of them in the world.
