Out here dogs are necessary, they warn us when dangerous animals are around and strangers. I have a few relatives in law enforcement, and we argue a lot about city cops getting scared and shooting dogs that bark at them. I tell them all the time that out here if you shoot a man's dog you will soon fall right next to it. Just to enlighten them a bit, I remind them that a jury released an owner that shot a man that saw a hunting dog waiting next to the road and thought running over it would be fun. The hunter saw it all and shot the man dead, all charges dropped, it was a different time when we had justice in the world.
Naturally any dog that attempts to bite a human or kill stock will be dropped quickly but those are almost always dogs dropped off by city dwellers that no longer want them and think that someone in the country will give them a good home. Dogs not raised with farm animals do not last long out here, they either starve, go wild or the working dogs kill them or run them off.
