That might be true for 15 minutes, but people don't care who invented a thing--they care about the thing.
Any resulting fame, money or power would act as aphrodisiacs, but the attraction would be to them and not the person who has them. And without them, the hero would fall to such obscurity that most people wouldn't even know their name.
Besides, cancer is an important check on human longevity. We've got enough problems as it is without people living another 20+ years.
