Read "On the Incarnation" by Athanasius of Alexandria. The whole work (which is only just short of 90 pages long) can be found on Google books. It's a great summary of the Christian Gospel.

on a more serious note, everyone is a sinner and sacrifice was the most common form of repentance, which is why it's so important (and also why he's commonly referred to as the lamb, as it was commonly used in sacrifice): he took all of our sins into himself and died for us so we could go to heaven. i glossed over a lot of things but I'd say just read the Bible to figure it out

It’s symbolic
Jesus dying on the cross is essentially symbolism for his real sacrifice, which is taking our sin for us when we repent.
