I'm wondering how a City DA has authority to prosecute what is essentially a Federal Issue.

He broke state and federal laws for misuse of campaign funds which usually amount to a misdemeanor. But it’s only a state felony if a second law was broken in conjunction with the first. The alleged second law upgrades it to a felony charge and since the second charge is only a state law and very likely not a federal one, he is being indicted by the state and not the federal government for this particular case. It unknown exactly what law he broke to raise it to a felony.

However, it is likely that it will end up in federal court by way of appeal. But it is unlikely the federal court will be any lenient if they produce evidence that Trump violated state law and may yet uphold it. This is even assuming the state judges don’t throw it out but that seems like a long shot. But not impossible.

He is ALLEGED to have "broke...laws."

All citizens of the US still enjoy the right to be presumed innocent until PROVEN guilty. That includes The Donald, like it or not. So how about we hold off on presuming his guilt?

Secondly, both Bragg's predecessor and the Federal Prosecutor for New York declined to pursue the case, so it seems sketchy that suddenly Bragg found the elusive piece of evidence that proves Trump's guilt.

And lastly, if Bragg is relying on testimony from that admitted and proven liar Cohen, he's got a long, tough row to hoe.

He has already been convicted of breaking state and federal laws for campaign funds and paid a fine, and I did use the word alleged for the supposed second law broken so I am not presuming guilt as many of my Republican contemporaries have done with Hillary and Biden. So you’ll forgive me for thinking you’re being incredibly pedantic.

Bragg’s predecessor, Cyrus Vance did pursue the case but chose not to indict the sitting President citing lack of jurisdiction and precedent. So, he brought charges against Trump’s organization rather than the then-President. Now that Trump is no longer President, he no longer has federal protection in which a proven corrupt Congress (both Democrats for and Republicans against) would determine guilt. Now an actual jury can do that. If not the Supreme Court itself.

I agree that over-reliance on Cohen would be a mistake but it would still be a miscarriage of justice to indict Cohen, and not Trump, who has both denied publicly and admitted in legal interviews that Cohen was acting under his authority.

30 charges seem to indicate that not to be the case. But I guess we’ll see.
