Actually that's mostly a myth. Think of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Chernobyl, these places have trees and grass growing, animals still roam, fly and swim, and people are still living there. After telling us that it would be radiated for hundreds if not thousands of years. You get radiation from the initial blast, but it soon starts to diminish, that is, dissipate soon afterwards. There is no up serge of people dying of radiation and/or cancer in Nevada, but with all the propaganda, I can see why you would think that.
