Isolationism is not that radical, just antiquated. What we learned around about roughly a hundred years ago is that if we refuse to put resources into building foreign relations, we actually end up losing more than we would have spent when the world breaks into wars with each other instead of trading with us. And since trading with a warring country is no different than taking a side in a war, ultimately, we get dragged into conflicts that we tried so hard to stay out of - with catastrophic results.
So, no, you're not being extreme, just about a hundred years behind history, that's all.
