You do favors when in office and then you become a 'consultant' or have 'speaking engagements'.
I suspect book deals work in a similar fashion too but can't be 100% because nobody tracks who purchases physical book copies when supposedly millions are being sold in a week.

If you hand the money over directly then you face prosecution, so instead you receive 'employment' over an extended period of time.
