They're not, and it's rotton for a number of reasons for me to throw shade on people who choose to be parents, even for the sake of "argument" (read: discussion).

My point, if I have one, is that it's just as hurtful to be called selfish for choosing to remain childless as it is to be labeled a breeder for choosing to have children. I also think both positions are as debasing to the people espousing them as they are to the people to whom they're directed. Both are condescending, scornful and unnecessarily judgemental, and neither serves any constructive purpose.

I'm a tit-for-tat kind of chum (or perhaps just tit), so when presented with the option to turn the other cheek, I typically opt to take a mobster apporach of based one-upsmanship. To wit, when I hear someone say "not having kids in selfish", I fall over myself to riposte the assertion.

I could expound my personal position, but it would be heavily prefaced with "but that's just me, I don't begrudge anyone their choices, no one should feel bad for doing what they believe is best, etc." Essentially the exact opposite of what's depicted in this meme.

10 SECONDS AFTER WEDDING: SO WHEN ARE YOU HAVING A BABY ARE YOU GONNA HAVE ANOTHER? WOW YOU HAVE YOUR HANDS FULL, ARE YOU DONE? OH FFS | image tagged in wedding, baby, parent with 2 kids on leash | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Gotcha, well then Agreed!

No matter what your choice in size of family you'll always be in the wrong for some people. I've heard it all. But honestly it's no one's business but your own .

The best reason to have a child is because you want to have a child. The only good reason to keep a child is because you want to nurture that child. Upon reflection, that's the extent of my position on the issue of human procreation. Kind of boring, but there it is.

I never thought that movie would come true in my lifetime. I thought we were 300 years from that not 30. We didn’t even need a time machine( technically a chriogenic machine) to see it.

At the risk of veering away from memes again, that's the whole crux of modern existence for people who can think and feel with acuity: the struggle to find peace on the prow of a sinking ship. It would be easier if I didn't give a shit but I do. Add it to the list of evolutionary dead-ends I guess.

Everything has a beginning a middle and an end, don’t ask why there is evil in the world, or why bad things happen to good people. When you zoom out an look at existence in its entirety, you are looking at a single perfect picture.

I'm certainly overly sentimental. If I could just learn to tolerate other people's suffering I'd be golden.

It’s hard to feel bad for other people when you have been through so much yourself. Hopefully if you live long enough you get to see it all turn around. For yourself and, For everyone who deserves it anyway.

If you don’t have kids you shouldn’t get social security, because the next generation pays for the predecessors’ ss

That's fair as long as I can claw back all my contributions and not pay into it again, because I've been paying into it for the benefit of the last generation with the understanding that it would there for me to collect when I'm old.

Well, you are paying for the previous generations’s social security, not your own. There’s a reason why it isn’t a choice whether you pay it or not.

And there's a reason the people who implemented it also exempted themselves from it. Paying into a fundamentally unsustainable pyramid scheme that I am exempt from collecting myself is something I am morally compelled to avoid. Another nail in the coffin of above-board employment. The sooner ss fails the sooner we can move towards something that can function within the constraints of physical reality, i.e. not being predicated on perpetual growth.

I've been thinking about it and you have a point. Eligibility for social security is already based on what a person puts into it. Making benefits contingent on service credits earned by both the person and their progeny seems reasonable given the existing flaws in the system. If the goal of ss was to insure against elderly and other qualifyingly vulnerable people becoming indigent, eligibility would be determined on a needs basis...

My solution would be to give ss recipients who reach their life expectancy a free trip to the knacker, but I always take the brute force approach to problem solving. 🤣

It depends on the situation
Each thing can be selfish and selfless depending on the person’s unique circumstances
