I knew this fun fact already; I'm actually from Chicagoland! :>
And yes, it is true - long before European explorers set foot in the area that would one day become Chicago, this place was actually a large swampland that had plentiful wild onions growing here (and named by the Native-American tribes living here accordingly) :>
