Someone once told me that Taiwan wasn't a country because it wasn't recognized by the UN. I said that the UN isn't everything, and that if that's the metric of a country, there are plenty of other countries that wouldn't then be considered countries, like Palestine.

Technically, the Republic of China is a country, not Taiwan, used to refer to the free area of the Republic of China consisting of Taiwan Province and parts of Fujian Province.
Legally, the "People's Republic of China" is an illegitimate rebel administration on the sovereign territory of the Republic of China.
But laws aren't always enforceable.
