Pro tip: the movie "Dogma" is not actually a substitute for the Christian or Jewish bible and Kevin Smith, like most people, did not actually ever read the bible, despite claims to the contrary.

this is funny, but it makes you think because jesus had no hate for anyone, so in that sense, he's a liberal, but he firmly believed in god, which can be construed as conservative, so idk, personally, i believe that he just wanted everyone to be equal under god

Hippie Jesus is a modern myth perpetrated by people who never read the Bible.
In Matthew 10:34-39 Jesus said:
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I have come to turn “‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it."
Jesus came to earth to save the earth. He died the most brutal death you can think of and took the sins of the world to hell with Him to defeat death and sin. He rose from the grave on the third day and returned to his Father in heaven.
God is love. But tough love.

Broke: Reading the Bible.
Woke: Reading the Bible, analyzing and deconstructing it, assessing which passages are more likely to be reliable than others, querying which parts of the Bible are currently emphasized vs. buried in various Christian sects’ traditions, comparing the Bible to other cultures’ holy texts and then asking how *those* texts have evolved over time in the way they’ve been perceived by their own faith adherents.

If you’re asking “But, why? Why would you do that? The Bible is the literal Word of God, if you’re doing that, then you’re questioning His word!!!”

Well, if that is the way you approach reading it, then I can’t stop you, but I can point out that’s why you’re over there and I’m over here.

You seem to be missing the point: your cliff notes version of the bible doesn't exist and never did. Your professors made it up outta whole cloth. Cross referencing it with the Koran wouldn't change that.

A couple of Sundays ago, my pastor preached on the love of money. The myth is that money is evil/sinful but the love of money is the real problem.

Even a poor person might not make it to heaven because they can have a love of money.

Hebrews 13:5 says, "Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.”

Revelation 5:11-12 says, "Then I looked again, and I heard the voices of thousands and millions of angels around the throne and of the living beings and the elders. And they sang in a mighty chorus: “Worthy is the Lamb who was slaughtered—to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.”

God never said don't have money because having money is a way to live, but having the extras that you don't need or wishing for the extras to more than an extent is the problem.

2 Timothy 3:1-2 says, "You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred."

Money can be put to beneficial uses, like charity. Socialists aren’t against money in principle either. The basic tenet of socialism is ensuring people have enough to live. Not enough so that everyone can have a private yacht and 10 homes, but enough so that everyone can have a full belly and a roof over their head and access to a doctor. I can’t imagine the Jesus I know objecting to any of that.

"Money can be put to beneficial uses, like charity."

Don't forget you can do your tithes every month, which is to give 10% of your money a month so the church can survive but mainly faith towards God. Who really cares if church is in a nice modern building or if it is outdoors, or even in a decent tent.

"Socialists aren’t against money in principle either."

Yet many socialists believe in taxing the church, and how on earth are pastors supposed to live without some of the money given by fellow Christians?

"The basic tenet of socialism is ensuring people have enough to live. Not enough so that everyone can have a private yacht and 10 homes, but enough so that everyone can have a full belly and a roof over their head and access to a doctor."

I even remember some political candidates in my state election last year that they wanted a working class wage and they can give the rest of their wages to community campaigns, yet Ralph Babet, United Australia Party's only senator whinged about his wage...

"I can’t imagine the Jesus I know objecting to any of that."

Maybe so, but some Christians argue that Capitalism is better because...

• Capitalism at its best lifts people up, creates a new product, service, innovation or efficiency.
• Free market capitalism discovers new drugs, new technologies and makes millions of lives more comfortable, productive and connected.
• Businesspeople add value to raw materials to provide necessary products in our lives.
• Whenever there is a crisis anywhere in the world, it is capitalist countries that take the lead in providing assistance.

First Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."
That means rich people are going to hell. That doesn't mean Jesus was a communist.
The "hippie jebus" is entirely and demonstratably false. Reading three verses outta context and pretending that's what the bible says doesn't change that.

We can argue over the exact meaning of Jesus’s teachings on wealth, but it’s fairly clear to me he falls more on the socialist end of the spectrum if we’re trying to map it onto more familiar political categories of today. Jesus didn’t have a full unified economic theory and it wasn’t communism (which didn’t yet exist). But oppressed vs. oppressor, poor vs. rich and the concept of the “meek inheriting the earth” are strong running themes in the teachings of Jesus.

Jesus did give out free meals and free healthcare, albeit with miracles that didn’t cost a dime to administer, so it’s not as if it’s the full-on Bernie Sanders plan.

What seems clear upon any reading of Jesus is that he was a traveling ascetic preacher who rejected material things in favor of the spiritual. All of that makes him fairly similar to a hippie, my opinion.

Basing a false version of religion on three verses of the bible didn't work for fake-mormon Incognito guy and it's not gonna work for you, but have fun.
Retconning Christianity to support [current thing] is just as big of a lie as retconning Christianity to support the Westboro "church."

There’s certainly a lot more scriptural support for the idea of Jesus as a proto-socialist critic of the powerful than there is for the idea of Jesus as a Westboro-style homophobic, racist bigoted hate-monger.

But for an alternative perspective, read as much of this WSJ article as you can manage to (paywalled, that’s weird)

Personally, i believe that we should take what jesus said by fact, not by what some monk wrote down hundreds of years after. IF we look only at the facts, we get a jesus who only wanted peace on earth, not what true evangelists say, which mostly (DISCLAIMER: NOT ALL) use the bible as an alibi to just be unforward-thinking, past-dwelling, homophobic, etc. values.
