Note the "FOR PROFIT".

"Michigan has the most for-profit charter schools in the country and some of the least state oversight. Even staunch charter advocates have blanched at the Michigan model."

"Michigan’s K-12 system is among the weakest in the country and getting worse. In little more than a decade, Michigan has gone from being a fairly average state in elementary reading and math achievement to the bottom 10 states. It’s a devastating fall. Indeed, new national assessment data suggest Michigan is witnessing systemic decline across the K-12 spectrum. White, black, brown, higher-income, low-income — it doesn’t matter who they are or where they live. ..."

"At the same time, banks and hedge funds, Miron told me, profit greatly from the charter sector, thanks to large tax breaks ... “A bunch of them thought, Wow, I can start a real estate division!” VanderWerp said. “We’ve run into this all over the place”: E.M.O.s buy buildings “for a couple hundred thousand bucks, lease them to the school for a couple of years and then sell them” to the school “for a few million.”

just speaking for myself, i'd like to see education in the hands of educators, not politicians at all.

I mean, as a conservative I think politicians have a valid, but small, role in education inasmuch as coordinating state, private, and individual education goes.

Why does education need to be privatized? Why do you have to turn our lives into profit streams for corporations?

I'd say, more often than not, charter schools are definitely money grabs. And it's a shame, because they, and on-line schools take big chunks of tax dollars that would otherwise be going to public schools. And more often than not, the charter schools are doing a worse job. A couple of them here have been shut down for poor performance.

So we should keep shoveling money at people who open schools for their own prosperity. Republicans have been drooling for years to get their mitts on that money.

Dude, what schools are making people millionaires here. Every private school I know of is smaller and less well furnished with technology and resources than state schools. 🤷‍♂️

Dude, do you know what a straw man argument is? You said millionaires. I didn't. Typical right wing tactics. Charter schools are a money grab. They have CEOs. They take thousands of dollars per student. They pay their teachers next to nothing. The students perform poorly.

Hyperbole is not a strawman.

Ignoring the glaring idiocy of that comment, I really wonder if you know how expensive a school is? Running a business is not cheap. Whether it's tax or private dollars, maintaining a school requires thousands for each kid enrolled. This is just how life works. The teachers in public systems tend to make more because more tax dollars are available. Doesn't mean they put more heart into the job or enjoy it more than private teachers.

And, yes, really. The GOP is really fond lately of saying, "you know what's best for your children."

Except... Desantis just decided he knows more than you do. Or your trained professional teachers. Or the school board you elected.

He decided no more books.

He banned all the books.

Not some. Not a few.

All of them.

Not all, but a large number, apparently. Second only to Texas nationwide

"The right's" lies don't have the same educational value as "the left's" facts. There's no hypocrisy in saying the government should be able to censor lies but not facts.
