I agree with her on "screw the government" and there are some good quotes from her that I might repeat in my memes because "haha funny Ayn Rand quote", but her views on society and religion were kinda weird.
She had great potential to become another Solzhenitsyn among Russian emigres, but missed it. Probably my main point of contention with Objectivism is, other than the outright promotion of selfishness, the support for big, multinational corporations. I honestly think that you can't have a free market without ensuring some level of competition, because corporate monopolies are just as disastrous as communist and fascist state monopolies. Also, anarcho-capitalism won't work, ever, as anarchy is not the natural state of man. True anarchy, the absence of any state or authority, is impossible to maintain for a significant amount of time, because someone, whether it be a biker gang or a rival government, will take power and establish a de facto state. Even in "anarchist" societies, the anarchist commune or anarcho-capitalist corporation will be the authority, and thus a state. The solution is not to destroy the state, which will only create another, but to limit the state's power as much as possible (libertarianism). I'm far more of a Ron Paul fan than an Ayn Rand fan. Ayn Rand wasn't completely terrible though. She did have some good points, especially on communism. Also, I had no idea you read Atlas Shrugged, wow.
"I had a hard time with Ayn Rand because I found myself enthusiastically agreeing with the first 90% of every sentence, but getting lost at 'therefore, be a huge asshole to everyone.'"
