Factual, truthful, and honest speech must have more rights than lies.

It's a big problem. "We don't stand a chance" is putting it a bit too strongly IMO. Let's not forget the encouraging results of the 2018, 2020, 2022 elections.

Even the 2016 election wouldn't have been won by Trump except for the workings of the undemocratic Electoral College.

There's still a majority of reality-based Americans, even if it's a small one.

I respect that. Ive got my reasons for saying and believing this. I don’t expect everyone to understand. I do appreciate your optimism, and I do still have hope because nothing ever goes how you think it will, And America is full of surprises. 🙏

exploiting the week and low IQ is easier than telling them the truth and letting them decide

Agreed! You need some degree of common sense and critical thought to come to reasonable conclusion. If you have neither then you are going to be a victim of disinformation.

preying on the weak and grifting money.. has there ever been a previous POTUS that directly grifted from his flock? billionaires asking people for donations?

None that come to mind. I can’t think of anything better to do with my money than to give it to the super rich.

Oh no, how dare people be allowed to disagree with you. The horror! Unspeakable! Inconceivable! How will America ever endure if everyone isn't in one homogenous hive mind?????

Sean Hannity testified under Oath that when it came to Dominion voting machines in election year 2020, he knew he was spewing bullshi.

That's going to cost Foxy dearly.. there goes the advertising and now 56 mins of Hannity and Tucker, no commercials

Hopefully it’s sets the precedent that you can’t lie on news shows.

Whoah, really? I never thought big news anchors would maybe put spin on issues. That never occurred to me. I thought all media figures were perfectly honest and not out to pander to confirmation bias.

:/

There's spin, and there's outright lying.

My point is that's not necessarily illegal. It's wrong and stupid, but not illegal.

The lawsuit that is discussing this right now is saying that it is as their use of free speech has caused considerable damages in spite of being told to stop as their claims had no basis later in 2020, yet they still continued to make fraudulent claims. No responsible fact-checking was done - at all. Hannity was *told* by Murdoch to push the story.

.... Alex Jones failed to adhere to legal warnings with his conspiracy theory. So, FOX may have to shell out one billion dollars to Dominion. I hope they do.

That's a fair point. I myself don't want to be hypocritical and I think CNN was wrong for slandering that one kid who was harassed by the drum protestor, so I could totally get behind enforcing some limits to news coverage.

Didn't his lawsuit fail? I wonder why, I should go look that up.

There should be standard in place where you are not allowed to deliberately mislead the public.🤗

Disagreeing with me is fine. If it’s based on facts. Not when it’s part of a conspiracy to spread discord and overthrow the government by lying to brain dead minions.

Those aren't necessarily the same though. That's my point. Just make sure you don't advocate for unfettered expression while also decrying misinformation.

It’s not to much for one to expect that when they are arch the news, they aren’t being lied to. It’s okay to have opinions when they are based on facts. Do you know what they call it when you have an opinion based on lies?

You can have an opinion based off anything, man. A fact, a feeling, a thought...the entire field of philosophy is based not off fact, and yet it is arguably the most important field of knowledge.

If you have the opinion that people should not be free to spew misinformation to others without some sort of warning, that's cool. I honestly agree that is an interesting idea. But it doesn't line up with the current and longstanding American view of speech, which is that anything short of voicing an immediate threat or actioned incitement to violence is allowable and balanced by the right to association.

I'm not necessarily opposed to that changing...I am just deeply suspicious of anyone who tries to suppress narratives they don't like.

It’s a fallacy. You could have just said no.
There is a difference between misinformation and disinformation. Do you know what that is?
[deleted]

Yes I do, don't assume, it just isn't relevant to my point. No idea what 'fallacy' you're talking about since we weren't talking logic. But since you asked, misinfo is just factually incorrect information. Disinfo, I believe, is misinfo spread with the intent (key distinction) to cause confusion?

That, at least, is the traditional way I've understood them.
[deleted]
3 ups, 2y
That’s actually pretty close. Misinformation is spread unknowingly, disinformation is spread deliberately. The big lie is a fallacy🤯. Look how much damage it caused and is still causing.

[cont.] people have been lying and influencing the country since the beginning of its history. You can find tons and tons of examples where celebrities, organizations, the government, or any combination thereof lied intentionally to the public and caused huge damage to the nation. This is how it's always been.

I don't have a good answer to the problem, but I know it's not clamping down on the ability to say something even if it's wrong. That is an extremely dangerous path because it opens the door to allowing that decision-making authority governing speech to control the narrative no matter it's truth value.

Authoritarianism is always appealing because it promises that your side can impose its values. You and I both would love to see a society where people told the truth and were kind. But look at how well Exxon Mobile suppressed its own climate-change data and pitched a narrative that the world isn't changing; it's dangerous. Big companies and big lobbies control Congress. Give them a legal chance to set the narrative exclusively via legislation and they'll have us all lapping up their words within no time.

Only ever give yourself as much power as you're comfortable with your worst enemy having.

Finger guns.

I don't really get triggered here. I'll express irritation when someone says something blatantly false or offensive, but I'm not gonna type in all caps, use profanity, or otherwise act like a child.

So far...
