People stood back and let W work his program. He did some good things and not so good things after that. But, we did not viciously attack him early in his recovery, when he would be the most vulnerable. I don't look forward to the week or so after Jack Smith gets his first indictment against Trump. His trolls will be wound up tighter than a two-dollar watch. If I prayed, I would pray that they choose to not be violent. I fear that anger will propel the worst of them to act out and add to the carnage.

He deserves any criticism you want to send his way as a politician. And I never voted for him. But, he is sober. As the Administrative Officer for Psychiatry at the Sepulveda VAMC, I also provided administrative services for the largest drug and alcohol treatment programs in the San Fernando Valley. I have met and met at "meetings" with thousands of people who hit their personal "bottom," and chose recovery. The stories that some of these people told about their pre-recovery behavior often terrified me or turned my stomach. They inspired me when I decided that my "two drinks after dinner," too often turned in five drinks to quit drinking, period. Nobody's perfect, the rest are in recovery.

And just because you admire someone who becomes clean doesn't mean it should cloud your judgement about other aspects of their life.

Bush was mostly a bad president. His policies affected me directly. His "Faith Based Initiatives," caused the Toys For Tots Program to only make toy donations to religious groups. At the time I was the PR and Fund Raising Director for a non-profit that provided mental health services to 1,000-children. Until Bush I could rely on TFT for a couple hundred Christmas toys. They told me in early December that we no longer qualified for donated toys. I had to call in every IOU I had, jump through hoops and reach into my own pocket, to make up for this loss.

As Governor of Texas, he proclaimed America was addicted to oil and launched the then largest wind farms to generate alternative energy. This positive initiative got lost in a sea of bad decisions on his part.

His WMD fiasco followed the tradition set by blaming Spain for sinking the Maine and the "Gulf of Tonkin Incident," as excuses for getting us into wars. Unless you have specific evidence that he violated a law in the process, this is a lesson for America to be more careful when choosing a President.
