Exactly, the comment is meant to tackle indulgences (something the roman church has disavowed) not the topic of works in general

Charging money for indulgences makes you wonder if they really care about you or if they just want your money.

The church then is not the church now. There is a difference between "paying" for something and "giving". People who put money in the collection plate aren't being "charged" for attending the service.
