The church then is not the church now. There is a difference between "paying" for something and "giving". People who put money in the collection plate aren't being "charged" for attending the service.

Catholics also believe the same, as not being able to 'earn' one's way into heaven. As always, the devil is in the details and what you want to define as "Work"

Exactly, the comment is meant to tackle indulgences (something the roman church has disavowed) not the topic of works in general
