As a Democrat, I'm, of course, not mad at the idea of a GOP civil war. Every moment they spend fighting each other is a moment they're not spending fighting us, or tearing the country apart.
But even more than that, what I want most of all is a Republican Party that can actually compete for my vote. A GOP that offers up candidates of actual class and decency. I might disagree with them on some things, but I might agree with them on others. I'd have an actual decision to make at election time.
That isn't just rhetorical posture. There was a time in my life when my vote really was up for grabs. I voted McCain in '08. I voted for the libertarian, Gary Johnson, in '12 and '16.
But I've been voting straight-ticket Democrat since '18, and I haven't had to think very hard about it. The MAGA movement must be defeated, period. Then we can talk.
