No online playing, cuz the servers host all the matches.

You keep your offline stuff cuz it's downloaded locally.

Everybody else is explaining this pretty well, but online play isn’t COMPLETELY off limits. 

People make their own servers for games. Somebody is working on making it possible for Miiverse to come back on the Wii U. If they did it for the Wii U, they probably already do for the 3ds. The installation might be a bit complicated though.
