I'd believe it would be possible in the future (not to far away but still a decent time) If you've watched Captain America: The Winter Soldier you would know that Arnim Zola had his brain uploaded to a computer. I feel like that could be possible irl if we used the right technology.

No doubt. But if you did that, would it still be you?

What if your consciousness was duplicated in digital form, but the you it was taken from remained intact? Would they both be you?

More to the point, which of those "yous" would you consider you?

Good point. I wouldn't be able to answer this But if I were running the machine I wold either delete the copy of me and upload the original or I would set the copy as a backup. (I would still have the copy gather the same memories as the original computer me so that they don't forget anything and upload copy me once original me broke). But yes, I feel like that would be likely to happen in early experiments and testing of the machine but I fell like it would be less common as more advanced technology became available.

My biggest hangup has to do with the "uploading" of oneself--I don't see how the original you can be transfered into a separate vessel. Copied sure, but then that's no longer you--it's a copy of you. Whether or not the original you is still around doesn't change that. A perfect copy of you would effectively be you from everyone else's perspective, but it would still only be a copy.

I guess I'm having difficulty making the leap from copying consciousness to actually transfering it.

Thanks!

My biggest hope is to incite people (myself included) to refine, progress and expand their thinking. 🧐

Your pretty good at it, I never thought about your reasoning until now

I fear that a duplicated version of your consciousness may be able to think like you, act like you, and say they're you, but that does not mean it *is* you.

Nobody knows. If any religions are true, probably not. If nothing metaphysical exists at all, then maybe. At that point, it comes down to if a computer can perfectly simulate everything about your brain

It also depends on the definition of immortality. If a perfect simulation of you counts as you then yes. If the awareness you experience is bound to your current self and can only be duplicated and not transferred, then the result would merely be an immortal copy of you. The original you and its consciousness would persist and perish in unison.

If you're into the SCP Foundation, you'll know that a Foundation doctor, Dr. Bright, wears an amulet known as SCP-963. This amulet allows his soul to survive after death, making him practically immortal. Another effect of this, if, for whatever reason, Dr. Bright is not wearing SCP-963, anything that comes into contact with or wears the amulet will have Dr. Bright's conscience controlling them. The same goes for if something consumes Dr. Bright, (which btw would not permanently kill him), like the internet SCP-682 cross-test in which Dr. Bright was fed to SCP-682, but neither of them were killed.

That's way cooler than the tabernacle crystal in Zardoz! Although that thing housed the essence of an entire community.
