As a Christian, I'm surprised that they illustrated that part of the Bible in a book made for children.

You're surprised by the...illustration?

Not the senseless violence and treating women as property?

Great, maybe you can help with a question I've had for awhile:

Do people become christians because they're rapists, or do they become rapists because they're Christian?

And you choose a god that commands his followers to murder, rape, and enslave those who hold different beliefs than you?

When has God EVER told his followers to rape others? I would love to see you find that verse.

As you approach a town to attack it, first offer its people terms for peace. If they accept your terms and open the gates to you, then all the people inside will serve you in forced labor. But if they refuse to make peace and prepare to fight, you must attack the town. When the LORD your God hands it over to you, kill every man in the town. But you may keep for yourselves all the women, children, livestock, and other plunder. You may enjoy the spoils of your enemies that the LORD your God has given you.

Deuteronomy 20:10-14

Literally every time god commands his followers to attack another land, he orders the women to be raped.

Why haven't you ever read the bible if you're pretending to be a Christian?
1 up, 2y
As a Christian, I am not proud that I haven’t read the WHOLE ENTIRE Bible, I am on a reading plan to accomplish just that though, and no, I didn’t start today to make a point.

If you memorized that scripture and didn’t pull it off the internet, then you might be able to find many more that don't condone intamacy outside of marrage whether it be forced or not.

And what do you think about the fact that the book of Leviticus says that a woman *being* raped is a crime and that if she refuses to marry her rapist she must be stoned to death? Does that make you feel closer to the lord?

There is no punishment for the rapist btw.

Which verse is that? I want to read it.

I asked what you think about Biblical law demanding that rape survivors marry their attackers.

I love having theological discussions with people who hold different beliefs than me. But it's very clear that you have never actually read the bible, since you keep asking an atheist to tell you what is in it and where.

If you know any real, sincere christians who can keep up and actually know that the bible says, feel free to send them this way.
1 up, 2y
I don't agree with rape, I know that 'bad' is a gross understatement when describing it. But no matter what, I can't change what they did back then, if that was the law, then that was the law, same with what goes on in Islam or anywhere else.

In this certain situation, it is about betrothed women, you can't say that every case is the same.

And I have already stated that I haven't read the whole Bible, but even if I had, I probably wouldn't be able memorize it all, I would need to read it so many times that I would be an old woman before I could get it all. To add to that, I not a bible scholar, so I can only do my best with what I do know.

Here is a link for your answer if you care to read it. I don't like the standards of how men treated women back then, but if you look around, it's not just the Bible. What about the other countries today that see woman as property, not people? That was the people's view of the world. Not God's.

Deuteronomy 22:25-27 goes on.

25 “But if in the open country a man meets a young woman who is betrothed, and the man seizes her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. 26 But you shall do nothing to the young woman; she has committed no offense punishable by death. For this case is like that of a man attacking and murdering his neighbor, 27 because he met her in the open country, and though the betrothed young woman cried for help there was no one to rescue her.

He only ‘cherry picks’ the parts of the Bible that reinforce his argument.

You’ll notice that after you decimated his bullshît, he never made a rebuttal.

I’ve been arguing with this leftist for a long time and this is typical of him.

23 “If there is a fbetrothed virgin, and a man meets her in the city and lies with her, 24 then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbor’s wife. So you shall purge the evil from your midst. Deuteronomy 22:23-24. There is punishment here for both parties, the man for violating her, and the woman for allowing it.
2 ups, 2y
Maybe *you* can't say that every case is the same..but someone who has morals and doesn't hate women has no problem saying that rape is always bad and no woman should be forced to marry her rapist.
2 ups, 2y
So again; you have no problem with rape survivors being put to death.

It's also cute how you ignore that this only applies to betrothed women.
2 ups, 2y
Correct, you cannot change what they did

What you *can* do is choose not take life lessons from a book that causes evil instead of ends it.

i stand corrected.
1 up, 2y
That isn't implying rape, most likely it meant slaves, which was very common in those times. Even if you look hard, I doubt you will find a verse that says "thou shalt rape and humiliate them"

Thank you my friend, and if there is an account of a Christian rapist, even in today's world, they were either driven by their sinful desires, or had misinterpreted the bible.

Well, if you think atheists hate god then your grasp on atheism is just as tenuous as your grasp on christianity. Maybe put down the rape-and-genocide filled fairy tales from the bronze age and pick up some Dawkins?

Again child, please stop making *all* Christians look bad. Some are decent people who have morals and can actually defend them without the use of Google.
2 ups, 2y
Please don't call me child, or kid, or anything else for that matter. Maybe hate is a strong word, but it’s the best I can use to describe this.
I'm not the most patient, wise, or knowledgeable person when it comes to defending my faith, but at least I have a hope for the afterlife. What about you? Do you believe we live, die, go into the ground and that's it? If you're right, then I am a fool.
But if I'm right, what about you? What happens when you die?

I have already admitted twice that I haven't read the entire Bible, but that changes nothing about my beliefs. I have read enough to know that God loves me (and you) so much that he was willing to give up his *only* son to suffer and die for our sins as the ultimate sacrifice. Being a Christian is not defined by how much of the Bible you have read, but instead whether you believe in Jesus as christ, so no, I did not lie. I have done this from my own free will, no force or trauma.

You also have my sympathy in what you may have experienced. I know that some churches can give people really bad experiences, so I'm sorry if you went through that. I know that I was standoffish, so I'm sorry for that as well. I would recommend someone to talk to you in person, but I can’t give personal information, nor do I know where you live. I recommend looking for a foursquare pastor (since that is my denomination) to answer your question.

I won't debate you anymore though, call it a truce?

Spend as much time as you need trying to convince yourself that you're somehow a Christian even though random atheists you meet on the internet know more about christianity than you do.

If can somehow call yourself a Christian than I must be the pope.
3 ups, 2y
What even happened to you to make you hate God so much?! I already said I was done debating!
1 up, 2y
what do you know about christianity
1 up, 2y
I should’ve said this the other day, but you continously said that I am not a Christian, but if you are an atheist, how can you know what a Christian is?
0 ups, 2y
*If you can
*Christian,
*then I
*the Pope.

Definitely not the Pope. Intelligence is a prerequisite for the job.

They were *literally* told to by the god you are defending for some reason. It's a shame to see so many Christian women internalize the self-hatred the bible tells them to feel.

I answered your question, why are you so afraid to answer mine?
1 up, 2y
Now, what did you mean exactly by the Bible telling them to feel and internalize self hatred?

If something that happend to you from your past is what drove you to feel self hatred, then maybe it would be better to speak on that portion of the topic.
1 up, 2y
What was your question? And don't go off on me for 'not remembering' just tell me again, directly what you want to know.

Telling someone that you only believe what you believe because you're worried about being wrong just proves how insincere your belief is. I see through it. Your god would see through it too.

How about this; pray for me to stop thinking of you as and calling you a child, see if that works.

I understand that as a wannabe Christian, you're worried about what your community does to children and you don't want that to happen to you. I hope you find the strength to get yourself out of that unsafe situation.

I too am shocked that they would put that in a book for kids, if you read the full chapter, king Saul was wicked and used the whole thing to trap David, thinking that with such an absurd task, the man would go and get killed by the other clan, this had nothing to do with God, but instead, a man who had been overcome by an evil spirit.
