Jonathan Haidt introduced the analogy that the human psyche has two parts: the elephant and the rider. The elephant is the emotional side and the rider is the rational side. The rider does their best to guide the elephant but because the elephant is so big and strong if there is a disagreement about which way to go the rider is going to lose.

I have also heard it said that the human psyche is more like an elephant and a lawyer. The emotional side (elephant) always does what it wants and rational lawyer’s job is to be the elephant’s advocate, rationalize the elephants behavior and explain to everyone why the elephant’s behavior was correct.

I think the second analogy is funny so that’s the one I agree with. Maybe we are an elephant with both a rider and a lawyer. Maybe both analogies are baloney. What do you think? Do we have any hope of controlling our emotions?

Oh, as to whether there's hope of controlling emotions...I mean, Spock would probably recommend logic and meditation. Exercise and yoga might help. If you ask me, testosterone is liquid anger, so if you're a male and you haven't made it over the hill, the rage will be there. The question is what to do with it, or how to channel it.

Personally, I take mood stabilizers. In your FACE, nature!

Trust. That's the song you got your tagline from. I recognized that immediately--NIHIL was my introduction to KMFDM. Of course back then XTORT was still in the works. I miss the 90's...

I think the human organism is too convoluted to lend itself readily to any simplistic analogy. I mean, I could say a banana is like footwear because you can put them on your feet and they tend to have an odor inside, but that paints a comically incomplete picture of what a banana is.

For the sake of comedy, and because this is fun, I'll have a go. Here's a hot take. The human brain is like a combination lock with each gate representing a facet of our conscious and unconscious minds. They each rotate at their own rhythm and each time two or more line up, something happens--either we remember something, or learn something, or forget something, or correlate two or more things we already knew which weren't previously correlated; maybe we get over a trauma or finally forgive some past slight. When all of them line up we attain enlightenment, transform into pure energy and sail to the moon on an ethereal sandwich of toasted bread and cheese.

I don't know how many tumblers the mind has, nor how large their openings are, nor if or how to vary them, or their speed, etc. We're kinda complex and didn't come with a manual.

RIP THE SYSTEM!!1!

The tagline is trust, the meme picture is godlike and the meme idea is vogue “Nothing's weaker than water, keep in control. We are bound by desire, can you govern your soul?” Also I I once own a shirt that said “black man, white man rip the system” on the back.

The point of a model is not to reproduce the original thing with 100% fidelity but to simplify it and make it easier to digest. The original elephant analogy was supposed to teach a person how to make a change in their life. 1) teach the rider the location of the goal and the directions to get there 2) motivate the elephant 3) remove obstacles from the path.

Models as variations on a theme. Like meme templates! I like it.

I always thought the line in Vogue was "blood is thicker than water"...I learned something today!

Regarding freedom of thought, the opening lines of Sturm & Drang come to mind. For it is written that "You make and break your own restrictions You write and prove your own revisions". I'll take the wisdom of Captain K over religious dogma any day. \m/

All though I suppose there's a measure of irony in following the words of someone else telling you to think for yourself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
