In the Christian idea, the opposite of pride is not shame but humility. Humility is seeing yourself no more or less than you truly are.

Interesting. Are they regarded as poles on a spectrum? I mean, are they mutually exclusive? It seems like it would be possible for pride and humility to coexist side by side in a person.

Yes it's kinda a spectrum,, you can't really be humble and prideful at the same time, you might switch between the two

I can see that. Thanks for the insight!

I feel like I already know the answer to this, but does the sin of pride refer to a toxic degree of pride, or is all pride regarded as categorically sinful?

I think it would refer to a toxic amount. Like you can be proud of an accomplishment you or someone did, more like a feeling of happiness and gratitude, like my kid gets an award at school I can say I'm proud of you. If it leads to you thinking yourself better than others and generally just exalting yourself while putting others down then it would be sinful.

That's what I figured, but couldn't rule out the possibility that the goal was to remain solely on the humility half of the spectrum.

Personal accomplishments and ones kids were the exact examples I had in mind of healthy pride. Great minds!

I've never personally had an issue with pride, which is probably why I'm so curious about it. Self-loathing was more my thing. It felt more wholesome for some reason.

Actually self loathing could be seen as a form of pride ironically. Pride is basically an inordinate focus on oneself, whether you think of yourself in a negative or positive light. Humility is looking outwards and seeing yourself as no better or worse than others.

I very well might be totally off the mark in my understanding I'm certainly no expert in practicing humility, lol

No, no, I'm being a gadfly. Stress-testing ideas is part of how I assimilate them into my worldview.

Clinical depression has nothing to do with pride or humility, I'm just being a nuissance for the sake of argument.

I'm also quite full of myself in my own way, I admit with marked reluctance.

You're not being a nuisance by any stretch, back and forth discussion is why I made this stream 🤗, I enjoy it immensely when anyone takes time to chat. You're correct that depression would add another factor into the virtue vice spectrum so a person might not be as responsible for those thoughts as a healthy person.
