Of course, Trump’s about-face on the Fifth and his political grandstanding was the only thing of substance he offered at the depo. He answered a question about his name and then it was “Fifth” and “same answer” for the entire day.
It’s a business fraud investigation— a civil case. Not a criminal case. Many criminal defendants take the Fifth. (Derek Chauvin, the George Floyd kneecop, took the Fifth.)
But taking the Fifth for literally every question when the case itself is solely about money and carries no risk of jail time is highly unusual. And yes, incriminating.
The vast majority of civil defendants either: (1) defend their conduct in a straightforward manner by answering the damn questions, or (2) Pay to settle the claims. The Fifth is a bizarre and frankly nonsensical option in this case.
If it were me? If I were a billionaire real estate scion of Manhattan, in my 70s and in a hurry? I’d just cut a check and spare myself the trouble.
Trump has obviously concluded that digging in his heels and claiming persecution is a bigger political winner for him. And because his fans demand literally no explanations out of him, he’s right.
That’s what makes me a normal human being and Trump a grifting narcissistic sociopath.
