I think the beauty of science compared to classic religious systems is that it's aware of itself enough to know when to correct itself. Traditional religion will try to force evidence to meet it while traditional science will alter itself to meet new evidence. I specify certain religions because modern moderate religious practices tend to make more room for scientific discovery than older ones.
