The Roma people originally came from the India/Pakistan area 500-1000 years ago. They were likely driven out by war. Europeans saw their dark skin & called them Egyptians; this was eventually simplified to Gypsies. They faced so much oppression that they
made a rule forbidding them to spend 2
nights in the same place; constant wandering
was a form of self defense. There are thought
to be 10-12 million Roma around today.
