The belief is that "global dimming" is an effect of particulate pollution in the air. The greenhouse gases were being released, but the particulate in dirty fossil fuels masked this effect by blocking the sun and making Earth's temperatures cooler. A couple good volcanic eruptions can put it all back in balance.
