Hayden portrayed the character as written to the satisfaction of the director. He did his job.
What critics seem to overlook is the character's background. The Jedi "raised" him and other younglings to become Jedis, but child rearing is not what the Jedi are about. The children receive training but not the affection they would get from a real family. This affects emotional growth. So Hayden Christensen did indeed portray Anakin as the character's development would have called for.
