But!
Impeachment serves important functions other than immediate removal from office. It’s about the next fight, and the fight after that.
What would be some of the benefits of impeachment?
—Hauling these justices’ asses before Congress is, if nothing else, necessary payback for stripping away a fundamental right.
—Impeachment hearings would certainly generate more cringey “Kavanaugh moments,” as they do their best Glenn Beck impersonations to stumble through their ordeals, and possibly generate more damaging lies that can be used against these justices later down the road.
—It will further sap away the credibility of this radical-right court that we could be living with for the next 30 years.
—It sends a message to SCOTUS to STFU and return to making rulings in line with precedent and American public opinion.
—It signals to your voters where your priorities are.
—It lays down a historical marker. Particularly in this case, as it would be the first time in American history that SCOTUS justice(s) have ever been impeached.
—And oh yeah, it gets the Republican Party on the record for acquitting proven liars. Again.
Abortion is *not* the fight Republicans want to have. They know they need “pro-life” voters but that they’re on the wrong side of this with the general electorate. They want to play down the effect of this ruling. They want to deflect and stoke perpetual grievances about other “scoops,” like Hunter Biden’s laptop, that have no impact on anyone’s lives.
Worth remembering Democrats impeached Trump for the first time in early-2020 over his Ukraine blackmail: It wasn’t “successful,” but it did help tee up issues for the election in November. No reasonable believer in democracy would argue that the 2nd Trump impeachment immediately after Jan. 6 shouldn’t have occurred, even though it too was unsuccessful. Failing to even try to hold Trump to account would have been more damaging. Same here.
Tl;dr — Impeachment would seize back the narrative when the Democratic Party has spent far too much time reacting to what Republicans are doing. Democrats won the last election. They should act like it.
