Gas taxes are going to go away anyhow. Why? The number of hybrid and EVs out there that aren't "paying their fair share". Since most gas tax money is earmarked for road and highway maintenance, we've got fewer people paying and the same (or more) vehicles on the road. What would be better would be an annual fee based upon how many miles you've driven.

Yes, the gps teacking would be intrusive. What I was thinking is this, you simply go to some type of government orifice to have them read and certify your odometer. They enter that into the computer and then you know how much to pay for your registration. That's pretty much how emission testing works now in Colorado except that it is just pass/fail.

Yeah, sometimes. Like I said, in Colorado we already have to go in to get our emissions checked, they can record your odometer too. I was in and out of there in 5 minutes last time.

I'm not making this up, it's popped up periodically over the last five years or so.
