The back history of Star Trek, Earth had to suffer through a lot before they could reach the the stars - unethical science out of control, constant wars, evil people leading countries including the most free country.

Ironic because it is Gene Roddenberry's personal beliefs (he was a big time socialist) that is the cause for doing it for real. . .and I'm not optimistic at all we will recover and reach the stars like in Star Trek.

Sadly, if we could, it would be the 1st time in history. Perhaps that is the whole purpose of life, to break that cycle - hard time>strong men>good times>weak men>hard times etc...
