the problem is the heat is not close enough to the surface in many areas of the world.

Yes, it can only be tapped in certain places. It seems absurd that after suffering from 3 nuclear bombs Japan chose to build plants like Fukushima. It's full of volcanic activity & must surely be one of the best places to try geothermal.
