His last name has been printed Perma in one report I read and Perna in another. I have verified that it should be Perna. I apologize for the misspelling. I also read that he hanged himself in jail and in his garage. I have not been able to confirm which is true.
His family reports that he killed himself because his spirit was broken by hounding by the judicial system. In my capacity as a VA Spokesperson, I have investigated dozens of suicides. I have been at the scene of a handful of suicides soon after the body has been removed by the coroner. I have talked to dozens of doctors and read psychological autopsies. According to the best medical science known to us Perna committed suicide for one reason. He was suicidal. Many hundreds of people have been exposed to the same stimuli a Perna was and did not take their own lives.
I am reminded of a spectacular suicide committed by a violent Viet Nam Veteran Activist a few decades back. It was during a period of time when a number of protests about homeless veterans in the LA area were staged. This Veteran went to the 11th floor of the LA Hilton, kicked out a window and jumped to his death. Activists blamed VA inaction on homeless Vets for his suicide.
Gordon Dillow, a reporter for the LA Herald-Examiner, found that the Veteran had put his brother in the hospital after beating him with his fists and a 2 by 4 piece of wood. The brother brought charges and he was to enter jail the week after his suicide. The veteran, who had a history of violent arrests, told friends that he would kill himself, before he would go back to jail. Millions of violent people go to jail every day and do not commit suicide. This veteran killed himself because he was suicidal.
