I have no problem with the idea that content moderation on big platforms like FB and Twitter should be more transparent. However, in this instance I find the decision defensible.

The Russian siege of Mariupol is highly newsworthy. The Russians are without question the aggressors in this conflict, and the Azov Battalion is one of the main groups standing their ground. Azov may be far-right assholes, they're guilty of war crimes (as are the Russians), but they're conceived as a self-defense unit and not the ones disrupting the global order. Putin is.

Same deal during WWII. Stalin was an asshole, but he was our asshole in the civilizational fight against Hitler. Churchill was right that Stalin was a murderous maniac, but FDR was also right that we needed that murderous maniac to beat the other murderous maniac.

War often involves dirty and shameful compromises and doesn't leave anybody innocent.

Azov was formed roughly a month after the Russians invaded Ukraine (for the first time in 2014) in retaliation for Ukraine kicking Putin's yes-man out of the Presidency.
