It was Gardevoir first. Gallade was an attempt to make it more masculine, but you'll notice that Gardevoirs have a 50-50 gender split, and if you translate the Japanese name, it means, basically, Sir Knight.

Because it didn’t work and gardevoir had that before they made gallade to be more like a knight
