while I would agree that both sides have adherents who take things way too far, I'm not going to say they're similar. A lot of Biblical rules are actually helpful in life if you try them, and that statement is hard to disprove whether you believe in a God or not (that is, if you've really tried it). The problem is that people add things to the Bible that have nothing to do with it, and many of those things tarnish the view of the Christian circle, which tarnish the view of Christianity altogether, which then makes it look like a fraud.
Whereas socialism, on the other hand, has been documented to never have worked. And although many socialists will say "it's never been tried properly", well, look at the human condition. Nothing is perfect, and no one is perfect. This means Christianity cannot have been tried perfectly, as no one can adhere to something perfectly, and despite that, it's still got a much better success rate than the 0% which socialism boasts. Yet people somehow act like if we experiment with it in the most powerful country around these days, it'll somehow be the first success. That is an astounding amount of blind faith (which is what it's going to take to believe many presuppositions to believe socialism will even work). First off, we're one of the most wealthy countries ever. Why would we try to fix what ain't broken? And although someone could easily try to apply what I said about Christianity being tarnished by outer problems to socialism, the truth is that, yes, ideas have been added to it to make it worse over time. The thing is, the original idea wasn't that great in the first place, either. And despite all those changes, it doesn't change the 0% success rate. And third, Marx himself called socialism an extreme resemblance to his idea, an idea that many now demand but no one will want to see in real life.
