A deeply paranoid and perpetually clunky defensively (There's only so much they can rely on colder winters than others are used to to halt the enemy) Russia fears any power at its doorstep. The Iron Curtain was not a mere matter of geography, and its eastern expansion and lopping off huge sections of Iran in the 18th Century have shown it the ease of losing less secured territory.
