I once had an idea for a story about a person that stumbles upon a government secret. The secret is so horrific that the government wants that person deader than dead. So what was the secret? That WW3 did happen and the Eastern Hemisphere got very wrecked. Government doesn't want this truth out because it's too horrible that they're afraid that what's left of human civilization would crash. People that 'travel' from the Western Hemisphere get on their airplane or boat are 'drugged/gassed' and put into an elaborate VR/Matrix simulator. What people experience as a vacation or whatever is only a three or day VR/Matrix experience and the 'news around the world' is one massive 'wag the dog'.
The ending would've been 'opened ended'. Would the main character expose the lie and hope what's left of human civilization wouldn't crash and burn like the rest of the world or would the main character keep the lie going until a better solution is found?
