US was a net energy exporter before KXL (making money selling to our friends) and now we are net importers buying more oil from Russia than we were before.

You do know KXL was not operational yet, right? Still under construction, only partially completed, was due to be operational 2023.

Canada owns the Keystone Pipeline so when a foreign Governments Corporation gains access to use eminent domain in a foreign land it goes against everything this country has fought for, There is also the same issue with allowing non citizens to purchase American land and real-estate. The problem is that the oil wells in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, ect..., are not totally owned by the Government. But the Keystone pipeline is owned by the Canadian Alberta Government. And the issue is that it's unrefined Tar sand, unlike the oil being pumped out in America. To send tar sand thousands of miles through pipe just to be refined and create a sand dune problem in America is just one of the reasons why Canada doesn't want to refine it in Canada.

And just to further criticize the government owned lands which contain high quality minerals, the American Government can claim they own these minerals, but it is not theirs in the first place when treaties became broken, and Native Americans, stripped from the lands they fought and held for more than 300 years slowly watching the invasion, giving in , and giving in sometimes by force. So today is much different, but it is still a matter of who really owns what. No matter what nobody can own the spirit of the past that haunts the history of the future.
