This is a prime example of the true American Spirit.
Another one of my favorites is the defense of Ft. McHenry. https://www.nps.gov/fomc/learn/historyculture/william-williams.htm
APRIL 12, 1945; Staff Sergeant Henry "Red" Erwin was hideously burned while performing a selfless act of valor, which unquestionably saved the lives of his fellow crew members. With "Red" expected to perish at any minute, Major General Curtis LeMay ordered the presentation of a Medal of Honor as soon as possible. A medal was located in Hawaii that night. The glass of its display case was smashed and the medal was flown across the Pacific. Using the strength with which he served, "Red" Erwin lived for more than 56 years after receiving his Medal of Honor. YOUR HEROES CAN BE DRUG ADDICTS, CAREER CRIMINALS, OR PEDOPHILES. MINE WILL BE "RED" ERWINS.
