If a movie is based on a book, a comic, a video game, or a historical event, those things are source material. You’re adapting something into a movie basically.

Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are all based on source material.

Oh dear, if only we had 30 years worth of comics, games, novels, reference books, novel guides to each film, mountains of material that inspired the OT films or god forbid a ton of cartoons to help us write material.
